3 Months 33 Things
When I look at my instagram feed I get these ideas in my head about the way I want to live my life. The places I would like to travel to. The foods I’d like to cook. The clothes I wish I had. House I wish I lived in. I’ve deleted the app from my phone for a time because I felt like I was starting to lose myself in all of the pictures of places I wish I could see and experiences of others. Because of my automatic habit of checking my feed every time I had my phone in my hand. But, I have to say, that instagram has also been a source of inspiration. I was so inspired by Courtney Carver’s Project 333, to purge my closet and try to live with less. I had been looking at Courtney’s profile for months toying with the idea until finally (at the end of October) I decided to go for it.
It was somewhat difficult letting go of things I spent money on. I tried to rationalize keeping most of it. Telling myself that I might need them later. I asked Leo for his help because it was a hard task trying to figure out what to keep and what to get rid of. The reality was that I didn’t need to keep most of what was in my closet. In the end, there were just those that I could not justify keeping. I donated some, packed some for when the weather changes and got rid of ones that were not in good condition.
Because this is my first time doing this, I found that some of the items of clothes that I initially chose for my three month capsule were not as flattering or as comfortable as I thought they were when I bought them. So, I switched them with other more comfortable clothes that I felt suited me better. I’ve done this a few times since I started this experiment. It’s taught me some things about my personal style that I wasn’t seeing before.
I look in my closet and see that I have so little compared to what was in there before, but I don’t miss any of the other things I chose to part with. Honestly, I don’t even remember what I donated and what is in storage. As for the items I have hanging in my closet, I’ve found that I wear some more than others and at the end of my three month period am considering getting rid of those that I don’t really wear. Not putting them back in storage to save in case I change my mind, but donating them.
When reading the rules and tips of the challenge, I decided that I would follow the idea of not shopping. I felt like I was spending too much too often, and wanted to change that habit. I failed once since starting the challenge. Embarrassed, I asked Leo to help me so that I wouldn’t have anymore breakdowns and would stick to my commitment.
So far, I’ve learned about how often I have the urge to shop. I also learned that I’d rather spend a little more for quality and comfort.
